I am pleased to say that I joined my first farm share this month! I have been wanting to do it for years now, but it was important to me to find one that only sold produce grown on their farm. I didn’t want to receive bananas or avocados or anything that I knew couldn’t be grown here in the Pacific Northwest. I asked around, and a trusted resource (Dana, from DanaTreat) recommended Nash’s Organics. I called them, got the actual farmer on the phone, and knew it was love.
Here is what I love about my new CSA: Nash Huber happens to be the first Washington state farmer to win the American Farmland Trust Stewardship of the Land award! He and his wife Patty are important advocates for farmland preservation and have created a training ground for future farmers who also believe in proper stewardship of the land. Farmers all over the West Coast know them and are impressed by their hard work and dedication.
Another reason I love them is because I know that everything I receive from them comes from their farm (though a few items might come from a neighbor in the same valley). Nash’s farm happens to be in the Sequim-Dungeness valley where they have a unique microclimate that allows for a longer growing season, and thus I will be able to enjoy my farm share into November (!). They even raise their own free-range pork and grow and grind their own wheat into flour. Really, it all just makes me swoon.
If you have been thinking about joining a CSA, now is really the time to do so. What I found out from the folks at Nash’s is that this is the time when farmer’s need seed money to, well, plant seeds. Springtime is busy for farmers, and also quite expensive, so joining the CSA now gives them much-needed cash to get everything purchased and planted. Then in summer when everything is ripe and ready, those with farm shares will enjoy an abundance of fresh produce, picked at its peak.
It feels good to know who grows your food, and it feels good to support David against Goliath. I can’t wait to get my first farm share this summer, and will be sure to keep you posted. Cheers!
